happy saint georges day…

Thor Heyerdahl has died at the age of 87.
In 1947, he and his five-person crew climbed aboard Kon-Tiki, an experimental balsa raft, and swept atop the Pacific’s Humboldt current from Peru to the Tuamotu islands – and into history………
i remember reading his books in my teens and enjoying his theories on how ancient peoples colonised various parts of the world, especially the pacific.
he hadn’t crossed mind in years and i think he’ll be a loss to the generally staid world of archeology.
things are a wee bit screwed up with the blog at the moment. i thought i’d try a re-design and although things seem to work ok some of the elements don’t line up – epecially in the archives.
oh well, i’ll see what i can do tomorrow ![]()
well not much. we did actually pop out for a wee while and watch some of the 35,000 partcipants in the years london marathon file past our house.
here’s the eventual women’s winner paula radcliffe (#111) at the 10 mile mark. the press are going crazy over here – she’s british, it was her first marathon and she came within 9 seconds of the world record (her time was the fastest ever in a women’s only race) the mens world record was also broken.
there are some more photos here but they’re not very good – some of the costumes are funny though ![]()

..the search page now looks a lot better and also has a link back to the blog.
one strange thing i have discovered is that when you cut and paste into adobe golive it really screws up capitalisation of variables and some <> signs. this meant that I had to edit the template in notepad – definitely a new experience
..and one that works! i took the one we bought yesterday back today and got it replaced. the new one works fine (although the reds seem very strong) but had to go through a palaver to get it done.
i told the chap on the service desk that i had a faulty tv – “sure thing” he said “we’ll send an engineer out” “no you won’t” i replied “i have the tv in the car and the big sign behind your head says that you will replace faulty goods within 28 days of purchase – get someone to give me a hand with it”
after getting the 28” wide screen tv out of the car (44kg BTW), unpacking it, plugging in the power and aerial, switching it on, tuning it in and then him saying “yes it is very out of focus” i got my replacement tv……. good old english customer service!
it’s nice not having to squint anymore
i now have a search function available! – it’s in the sidebar at the right of the page. although my weblog is only a page long at the moment it will get bigger and so i thought that a search function would be a good idea (for me as well as you) the page that the search goes to is really crap at the moment but it does the job, and i’ll be working on it after easter.
