100 ! – six feet under

This post was written by Marc in the category(ies) News 4 Comments »

Post number 100 !  Woo Hoo smile

I watched the pilot episode of Six Feet Under tonight and think that I’m going to like it.

It’s a drama about a family whose undertaker father/husband gets killed.  It’s written by the guy that did American Beauty and sounds dead boring (pun intended) but I think that the characters will really grow on me wink

not getting out

This post was written by Marc in the category(ies) News No Comments »

I haven’t been getting out into the blogworld much over the last few days 🙁

The reason is I’ve been trying to (re)create a website that I visit – Clieworld.

The webmaster, Shaun, handwrites all the individual entries by hand, manually archives etc and I sent him an email saying “there is a better way!” So the last few days have been spent retrofitting some of the site into MT2.11.  It would have been fairly painless but I wanted to do it all in php so I could minimise the effort by using include statements etc and also opening the door for future functionality.

This would have followed the normal process of coding html then loading up to the server ad infinitum except for the fact that my webhost was (and still is) being a bit tardy with changing the permissions on the test directory that I’d set up on my site.  It just so happened that I visited the scriptygoddess website as I do most days and happened upon a link that stepped through how to get php working on the desktop so that one can try out new things without having to upload to your host.  Then, of course, I had to get CGI scripts working locally……….

Another walk-through later and the end result is I now have Apache server 2.0.36, PHP 4.2.1 and ActivePerl 5.6.1 all working together on my desktop and can run html, php, cgi etc locally smile MT runs very fast locally I can tell you! :vbg:

avantgo channel

This post was written by Marc in the category(ies) News No Comments »

Me and my clie

Got a PDA?  Got Avantgo?  Want to read Marc’s Musings on the go?

Well now you can!

I have created my very own custom Avantgo channel that allows those people with mobile devices to carry me around wherever they go smile You will need a PDA (of course) and an account at Avantgo (they’re free) If/when you have both of these thing follow this link or click on the picture to automatically add my channel to your subscription.  It’s been set up so that the images aren’t downloaded so it won’t take up too much of your PDA’s precious memory and includes the last 15 entries.

Thanks to Kiffin for the idea and to this page at Meryl.net on how to get this working for a Movabletype weblog smile

UPDATE: As I use smilies so often (as do people commenting) and I use images rarely (except to link) I have decided to include images in the channel.  This can be changed when you subscribe but as it stands at the mo’ the channel’s only 15K so I wouldn’t worry too much about it smile I’ve also changed it to only contain the last 10 entries – as most people synch their PDA’s at least once a day I thought this should cover it. 😎

blood

This post was written by Marc in the category(ies) News 8 Comments »

I was on my way to the supermarket yesterday and there was a truck belonging to the National Blood Service in the mall carpark.  I hadn’t given blood since moving to the UK and had been thinking about it over the last few days so the appearance of this mobile donation unit was weirdly appropriate.  It’s been over four years since I gave blood (28th January 1998 to be exact) and it felt good to give again smile I think it was my Mother who instilled the feeling of civic duty that comes with giving blood – I have been giving since I was 17 and gave blood 37 times in NZ.  My mother never had particularly good veins and would come back from donating with bruises where they had been digging around looking for a decent one.  In the end they told her not to put herself through it any more.  Personally I must have great veins – I have little scars in the inside of my left elbow where they put the needle every time! and the fastest I have filled a pint bag is three and a half minutes.

While I was lying there I was also thinking about organ donation. I have been a donor as long as I can remember and was trying to figure out what reasons people would have for NOT being a donor.  My first though was maybe they refuse on religious grounds.  But if the body is but a shell for the soul and the soul departs after death then what’s the problem?  Me, I just think you die and that’s it so for me they can have whatever they want.  I’m not particularly charitable in life so the least I can do is help someone out in death……..

Does anyone have any thoughts on this either for or against organ donation?  I’d really like to know what the 3 people that visit this site think on this matter smile

weekend

This post was written by Marc in the category(ies) News No Comments »

Synopsis: Busy but uneventful weekend had by London based Kiwi.

X-pan: Had real trouble getting my head around the panoramic format.  I really takes a whole new way of thinking that I have an idea would take a while to get.  Spent 8 hours on Saturday taking photos both on my my own and with a buddy of mine Mark.  I took the 2 films in to be developed and printed today (48 quid for 1 colour and 1 B&W neg film – bugger me!) I’m not getting them scanned so y’all probably won’t get to see them.  If need be I’ll scan the prints on my cheapo flatbed.

Brunch: Sunday morning Vic, Richi, Fi and I went to Wapping Food for brunch.  I wanted to go ‘cos they had a photo exhibition based around September 11th. The pictures were quite amazing and some of them were printed at 5m square! The impact of the photos almost made up for the rather mediocre food.  Everybody else’s eggs were stone cold when they turned up and so were promptly sent back.  Cold + hard boiled I can live with but cold + runny just creeps me out!

flowers

This post was written by Marc in the category(ies) News No Comments »

Here’s a quickly snapped image of the flowers I bought Vic.  She loved them, asked what I was apologising for (nothing) and then went back to loving them smile

Not bad for supermarket bought flowers I thought.

I’ve just upgraded to Movabletype 2.11 so if you run into any problems please let me know

I think that I moved all my MT file changes over.  I updated the automatic smilies so that they now align=”absmiddle” which had been bugging me for a while smile <--see!

ok – that’s it !!!!

This post was written by Marc in the category(ies) News 4 Comments »

all my clothes have shrunk!

but seriously i am officially “too fat !” by officially i mean too fat for my liking.  in the last six months i have become a right bloater and have decided I need to do something about it. i have not weighed myself but will do so on monday morning when i will try to start slimming world – not officially of course but vic has all the books and stuff from before our wedding so I?ll use those as a guide.

it’ll be tough methinks ‘cos i work from home 🙁 but i reckon if i get rid of all the crap food i should be ok.  this is purely due to the fact that i am too lazy to walk to the shop to buy food – crap food tastes great but it’s not worth leaving the house on a special trip for!

every monday morning i am going to weigh myself and post the results here.  hopefully the sheer embarrassment of having a bad week in front of everyone will keep me on track and make up for my extreme lack of self control and will power.  my hope is it?ll work kinda like the weekly weigh-ins they have at slimming world meetings.

on monday morning i will find out how much i weigh and set a target weight.
